Hutong
The term hutong appeared first during the Yuan Dynasty, and it is a term of Mongolian origin which means town. Hutong is a type of narrow street or alley, most commonly seen in Beijing, China. In Beijing, hutongs are alleys formed by lines of Siheyuan, traditional courtyard residences. Since the mid20th century, the number of Beijing hutong has dropped sharply as they are demolished to make way for new roads and buildings.In the view of Beijingers, hutong represent a period of history as well as a cordial lifestyle even an encyclopedia of Beijing.
