Jiayuguan Pass
There stand 14 major passes (Guan, in Chinese) at places of strategic importance along the Great Wall, the most important being Shanghaiguan and Jiayuguan. Jiayuguan is located at the narrowest point of the western section of the Hexi Corridor,6 km southwest of Jiayuguan in Gansu. It was built near an oasis that was then on the extreme western edge of China. There are 2 gates:one is on the east side of the pass, and the other is on the west side. On each gate there is a building . An inscription of Jiayuguan in Chinese is written on a tablet at the building of the west gate. The south and north sides of the pass are connected to the Great Wall.By the early 16th century, Emperor Jiajing of the Ming Dynasty closed the gate of the Jiayu Pass to resist invasion by alien tribes, leaving Dunhuang thoroughly out of its jurisdiction.
